A Look
into
Lively Design

Concept:This project involved creating a physical design piece that reflects a designer of our choosing and their body of work, while designing intentionally from found insight into who the designer is, how they worked, and what work they did for the world. I chose Na Kim for two reasons: her work stood out to me instantly with its simple shapes and bold colors, and also because I had no idea who she was. I wanted to learn more. I created a publication that is thoughtful of Na Kim’s body of work and holds true to her spirit of design.
This is a 50 page book that plays with type, image, structure, and layout. I chose to create a publication
since Na Kim designed her own book as a means of it being a playful portfolio, and I wanted to hold true to
her main channel.

The color system I used corresponds directly to the colors Na Kim uses. I also included page separators that used the main shapes found in her work. I had laser-cut into several black sheets of paper, refering back to Na Kim’s ever present use of shape in her work. The shapes itself would have been too static on a page, and too similar to Na Kim’s own work, so I included these hollow elements that lead you through the book in a subtle but special way, especially when held in person.

Insights:Allow yourself more time than you think you need for production. This project also taught me how to show someone else’s work in a way that does not replicate it, but showcases and reflects it.
